Frequently Asked Questions.

  • All businesses in NZ must keep records of their business transactions for 7 years. You can manage this yourself with spreadsheets and folders, but as your business grows it is much faster and easier to do this with accounting software.

  • Your bookkeeper makes sure your business transactions are recorded correctly so you can use your numbers to make financial decisions and so you meet your record-keeping obligations.

A bookkeeper will collect your bills and receipts and attach them to transactions in your accounting software to keep all your business records tidy.

  • A bookkeeper is there in your business with you, doing daily and weekly transactions. They give you a financial overview in real time so your business is always up to date.

An accountant usually comes in once a year to do your tax returns and annual financial statements. They are a lot less accessible than a bookkeeper.

  • We only provide bookkeeping services (such as your month-to-month banking, invoicing, and GST returns).

If you need your annual financial statements and tax returns done we are happy to liaise with your accountant to provide information for these, or to provide accountant recommendations if you need one.

  • There are so many reasons! Here are just a few.

Reduce costs, as you only pay for what you need. No overheads, no office space and no hidden costs.

Save time, which can then be used in other areas of your business (or personal life).

Scale and grow more easily. Our services are customisable, so you can scale your support as you grow.

Get an accurate and timely view of your business data. This helps immensely with understanding your business and being able to make informed decisions.

  • Bad Books is available to anyone in New Zealand. We use cloud-based systems and remote support so you (and your documents) don’t need to leave your office.

  • Book a complimentary 15-minute phone call so we can discuss your situation in more detail and find the best plan of action.

  • In short no. We work with a wide range of clientele who are aligned with our values.

  • We love working with women-owned and run businesses, or where women are in charge of the finances.

CEOs and founders who want to grow and scale their businesses and are looking for the next step.

Sole traders and small business owners who are looking for some expert help.

Admin geniuses who are helping keep the business moving forward but need more support with the finance side of things.

  • Businesses who don’t (or aren’t willing to) use Xero. We love working with Xero and have found it an amazing platform for our businesses.

‘Side hustlers’ or hobby businesses that aren’t interested in gaining their main income from their business.

People who are not a good fit for us. It is important for us (and you) to find the right partnership. We love to partner with businesses where we can help achieve their goals. We would never want to overcommit or under-deliver (you deserve more than that) and will not always be the right fit for everybody.
